Editorial No. 02 / 2008 - page 3

None the less, there often still is a clash between the green “theoretical” approach and the “reality” of customer satisfaction. If the customer suddenly requires an empty container for the next day, it is simply impossible to send it by barge or rail in most cases and “high-emission” transportation by road can hardly be avoided.

Thus, not only the shipping lines but the shippers, too, really have to make an effort, in order to achieve a real impact. We all have to join forces, in order to reduce bunker and emissions – by improved technology, more efficient planning and management of the supply chain, by an extra vessel or by cost saving through shorter standing times and quicker clearance from the terminals.

We are confident that our joint efforts to save oil for economic and ecological reasons will bear some fruit in the near future. So we carry on investigating new approaches and trying different solutions to achieve that goal.
