    MEX service being retuned

The decision of Tokyo-headquartered Mitsui OSK Lines to join with its New World Alliance partners in a new Far East/western Mediterranean service means that it is resigning from the MEX operation, which is being revised as a consequence. Currently, MEX is a joint operation of MOL, Hanjin and UASC, with Senator Lines buying space. It uses 7 x 2,700/3,100TEU ships, with MOL and Hanjin contributing two vessels each and UASC three units. The shortfall in tonnage created by MOL’s departure has not yet been resolved, although Senator confirmed that it will not be a vessel provider in the service. It is also understood that MOL will leave its ships in the service until the end of May 2008, at least, thereby giving Hanjin and UASC time to sort out new charters and/or reassign owned ships from other routes to the trade.

    Update: MEX Service

MOL is to leave the joint Asia/Middle East/Mediterranean service it operates as a vessel provider with UASC, Hanjin and Senator Lines from late May, PR News Service can exclusively reveal. MOL has operated two 3,000 teu vessels on the service which was marketed by the line as the EMA service, and by its partners, UASC as the AMC1, and Hanjin and slot charterer, Senator Lines, as the Mediterranean Express (MEX). As MOL leaves the service, the remaining vessel operating partners, UASC and Hanjin will increase their own deployment taking over the weekly schedule slots to ensure a fixed-day weekly service continues without interruption. Senator Lines will also be able to offer an increased allocation, almost doubling its present weekly space to around 400 teu following the reshuffle of service partners.

As exclusively reported by PR News Service under Copy 5498, MOL is to leave the Asia/Middle East/Mediterranean service, marketed by the line as the EMA, officially from May 20th. Hanjin and Senator market the service as the Mediterranean Express (MEX), UASC, the AMC1 service. The changes will mean increases in weekly slot allocations for UASC and Hanjin, as well as boosting slot charterer, Senator Lines weekly allocation to around 400 teu, believed to be almost double the existing amount. K Line also has slots on this service.
